Sounds Highly Sensitive Persons hate

Because Highly Sensitive Persons (HSPs) hear sounds more intensively, they can even get nervous or irritated when there's an annoying sound. So it's important to know that it's normal for HSPs to get nervous.

People yelling - can be horrible for HSPs (c)
What makes a sound irritating? The main reason why HSPs hate certain sounds is that they are irregular. Regular noises, like white noise, can even have a calming effect. It can be very pleasurable to hear rain. However, if your neighbour plays his drum set at irregular hours, it can be extra annoying.

Second reason: the sounds HSPs don't control. Whether other persons control them, or animals, the lack of control plays an important role. The easiest way is to ask the responsible person to stop. Or with the neighbour playing on his drums, ask to have regular hours. For example only on Mondays and Wednesdays between 16:00 and 19:00. So one can plan his walks then.

That may be extra difficult to do for HSPs. Because HSPs often feel strange - no one else seems to bother about the clicking pens. So why should they? Plus, asking others to do something for the HSPs themselves might seem egoistic. But it isn't. So make sure you ask the responsible person to stop making the annoying sound. Whether it's the yelling, the honking, the sloppy eating or the phone ringing, it's not a crime to ask.

If you do have control over the sound - water dripping, mosquitoes, clocks ticking, your baby crying - just stop the sound. You will concentrate better once the faucet has stopped dripping. For the baby, here's a great tip.

The last option is to put earplugs or headphones on. They're your best friends in these situations, so bring them everywhere you go.
